The U3A is an international organisation which was started in France in 1972, with the first British U3A being formed in 1982. There are now more than 800 local U3A groups throughout the UK.
The Upholland & District U3A was formed in 2005.
Currently we have over 600 members participating in more than 40 interest groups, providing a range of activities varying from academic, through practical and leisure, to pure relaxation.
We are based in the picturesque village of Upholland on the eastern edge of West Lancashire, situated between Skelmersdale and the Orrell area of Wigan, with easy access from the M58 and M6.
A meeting for all members is held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, at St Teresa’s Club in College Road(WN8 0PY), between 10am and 12 noon, when we have refreshments and a chat with friends. This is also an opportunity to talk to group leaders and get an update on events, followed by a speaker presentation on an interesting subject.
We also have a coffee morning on the 1st Thursday of each month, at the same venue, where people can pop in and see friends, book tickets / places for events and generally find out what is happening, but there is no speaker at this meeting.
As a U3A group we are committed to the principle of sharing our skills and talents in advancing knowledge among older people; to source facilities for leisure time and developing recreational activities for all who are no longer in full time employment and have a wish to get involved and share interests.
Our idea of retirement is about Fun, Enjoyment and keeping body and mind active – Our objectives, which are Recreational, Cultural, Social, Physical and Educational, provide all three. All we ask our members to do is “Reach out and Embrace U3A.” This can be a life changing experience.
